What Is Assembly Sequencing?

Determining the Assembly Sequence
The first step in assembly sequencing is determining the assembly sequence. The car manufacturer will decide which cars will come through the assembly line in a specific order on a specific day. For instance, the sequence of cars on a given Monday may be a blue Model Alpha, a yellow Model Omicron, a green Model Zeta, and then a black Model Phi.
Once the car manufacturer has figured out what the assembly sequence will be for a given day, they can figure out which specific parts they’ll need in order. The Model Alpha and Model Omicron may use Seat A. Therefore, Model Zeta may use Seat D and Model Phi may use Seat M. The manufacturer will send a request to the seat manufacturer for two Seat As, a Seat D, and a Seat M.
Manufacturing the Parts
Once the seat supplier receives the order, they begin putting together the seats. They may have their own assembly sequences for parts and other supplies. But they do not make these seats until they receive the order from the car manufacturing plant.
The workers at the seat manufacturing plant will assemble the seats in the same order as they will eventually go into the cars. So, in order, they will manufacture a Seat A, a Seat A, a Seat D, and a Seat M. Then they will pack these parts up and prepare to ship them to the assembly plant.
Delivery and Installation
In the best automotive manufacturing systems in the world, each part is delivered “just in time”. As the blue Model Alpha pulls up to the seat assembly area of the line, Seat A gets delivered from the seat manufacturing plant. Workers at the car manufacturing plant can install the proper seat in the appropriate car.

Workers don’t have to wait around for parts to arrive, and they don’t have to waste time finding the right part. Assembly sequencing ensures that the assembly worker has the right part in the right time to install in the right car.
